America’s Greatest Plague: An Absence of Godly Fear

As America grinds to a halt due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), schools are closed, major sporting events are cancelled, and even churches have moved to online services. Fear is everywhere, except for where it should be.

David, in Psalm 36:1-4, summarizes the world’s (even America’s) current state quite well when he says…

“…Sin whispers to the wicked, deep within their hearts. They have no fear of God at all. In their blind conceit, they cannot see how wicked they really are. Everything they say is crooked and deceitful. They refuse to act wisely or do good. They lie awake at night, hatching sinful plots. Their actions are never good. They make no attempt to turn from evil.”

The apostle Paul alludes to this passage in Romans 3:10-18 when he reminds us that apart from a true relationship with Jesus Christ…

“As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous–not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” “Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave. Their tongues are filled with lies.” “Snake venom drips from their lips.” “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” “They rush to commit murder. Destruction and misery always follow them. They don’t know where to find peace.” “They have no fear of God at all.”

Most Bible translations say there is no fear of God before their eyes, which is to say, that they are blinded by sin as to just how wicked they really are. This is clearly the state of the world, and yes, America, today.

Right now, we are running to and fro, getting all worked up about a virus that has so far killed about 50 people in our country of over 320 million people. Yet, we hardly flinch at the thought that our country murders over 2,000 babies in the womb per day. And to top it off, we are pushing for more legislation to even be able to kill babies outside the womb if the mother decides she doesn’t want it to live.

I won’t even take this moment to go into all of the sexual perversion that is literally being legislated, which includes the normalization of the sexual confusion and exploitation by schools of children as early as pre-kindergarten. Truly, as David says, “sin whispers to the wicked, deep within their hearts. They have no fear of God at all… they make no attempt to turn from evil.”

And David also offers us another very poignant example that we here in the allegedly greatest country on the planet could really take a valuable lesson from as it pertains to the fear of the Lord. Check this out…

In 1 Chronicles 21:1 it says that “Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel.” Verses 7 and 8 says that, “God was displeased with this thing, and He struck Israel. And David said to God, “I have sinned greatly in that I have done this thing. But now, please take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly”.

So, even though David repented, how did God strike Israel for what appeared to be an act of pride on David’s part? 1 Chronicles 21:14-15 tells us that the Lord sent a pestilence (or a virus if you will) on Israel that killed 70,000 men. But that’s not all! It also says that God sent an angel to Jerusalem (the capital city) to destroy it, but as he was about to destroy it, He stopped the angel!

America has been so tremendously blessed by God that we could never begin to properly calculate His goodness to us in relation to our continual wickedness. He has certainly punished us infinitely less than our sins deserve (e.g. Ezra 9:13). We are clearly a sinfully prideful nation. And we should pray to God for humility and repentance for ourselves and for our leaders. AND HERE IS ONE MORE VERY GOOD REASON WHY…

This same 1 Chronicles chapter 21 account is also mentioned in 2 Samuel 24. But look at what it says in verses 1 through 4 [BUT PARTICULARLY IN VERSE 1]…

“Again the anger of the LORD was aroused against Israel, and He moved David against them to say, “Go, number Israel and Judah.” So the king said to Joab the commander of the army who [was] with him, “Now go throughout all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, and count the people, that I may know the number of the people.” And Joab said to the king, “Now may the LORD your God add to the people a hundred times more than there are, and may the eyes of my lord the king see [it]. But why does my lord the king desire this thing?” Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab and against the captains of the army. Therefore Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king to count the people of Israel.”

Do you see what that first verse says?

It clearly tells us that a Sovereign God moved David against the people of Israel to act out the sin in his heart and pridefully number the people. And as a result, God punished David and the people by taking the lives of 70,000 men in David’s kingdom. AND He was about to let an angel destroy the capital city, but relented.

Here is the simple warning, people. God is not to be taken lightly. Sooner or later America is going to have to pay for its abominations. That sooner could be sooner than any of us think!

Just think… If God was willing to do such to His chosen nation Israel and to David the man after His own heart, who do we think we as a nation are? How shall we escape?

Never mind a relatively insignificant Coronavirus. Viruses are everywhere. It is only by God’s grace that we aren’t consumed by them. America’s greatest plague is an absence of godly fear.

We’d better pray saints, because God’s mercy is this nation’s ONLY HOPE, and sinners’ repentance and faith in the only way to God, the Lord Jesus Christ, is absolutely the ONLY CURE!
