Our Woken is Broken: The Eyes Wide Shutness of Sin and the Only Permanent Solution

A tidal wave of racial unrest is sweeping across America. And when the churches should be like lifeboats, many of them are in need of rescue from the riptide of social justice warfare and its self-proclaimed “wokeness”.

The word “woken” is the past participle of “woke,” and means having been made aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues. For example, the term is widely used right now in the area of racial and social justice.
.
Online publication, The Telegraph, in a 2017 article entitled “How Woke Are You? Find Out What it Means as Word is Added to Dictionary”, wrote the following:

The words “woke” and “post-truth” have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), as the political landscape gives rise to a host of new terms. The use of the term “woke” — an adjective meaning “alert to racial or social discrimination and injustice” — was added to the dictionary after being popularized by supporters of the Black Lives Matters movement. The movement is credited for bringing the term — in particular the phrase “stay woke” — to a broader audience, especially through social media. Meanwhile, “post-truth”, a previous Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year, is defined as “Relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping political debate or public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.

And therein lies the age-old problem. They are essentially saying that being alert to social discrimination and injustice today is less based on objective facts, and more based on appeals to emotion and personal belief. And they are right, but this fact is woefully wrong; it always has been wrong, and always will be. You see, although the Oxford Dictionary has only recently added the words “woke” and “post-truth” to its vocabulary, their meanings are truly as old as human history itself.
.
The more one studies Romans chapter one, the more one can see how precisely it summarizes the first four chapters of the Bible book that explains the “genesis” of all things. And one particular verse that speaks so profoundly to the ideas of “wokeness” and “post-truth” is found in Genesis 3:7, which says…

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.

In the beginning, the truth was that God gave humanity dominion over the world, and He did so along with the singular prohibition to not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. That truth’s consequence was that if we did eat, we would die. And what happened when Adam ate? Of course they did not drop dead on the spot. Instead it says that the eyes of both of them were opened. The death of God’s truth clearly understood by mankind as well as all other forms of death were born.
.
Because Adam and Eve (and thus, we) entered into a fallen, sinful, dying, age of post-truth which only a “Last Adam” (aka, Jesus, 1 Cor. 15:45), can bring us out of, and because their eyes were opened to a whole other source of enlightenment by way of Lucifer (aka, “light-bearer”, Isa. 14:12), ladies and gentlemen, it is clear. Our woken is broken.
.
Have you ever had a nightmare within a nightmare? You know, those bad dreams where you wake up and feel relieved that you’re out of that dream, only to realize that you’re still dreaming? That is pretty much what began for humanity the moment Adam ate the forbidden fruit. We have been waking up to all sorts of knowledge and philosophical ideas to continually find that we remain in the nightmare of a fallen, sinful humanity and world. This fact prompted the great and wise King Solomon to come to the sad conclusion that everything under the sun is vanity and vexation of spirit (Eccl. 1:14).
.
And the worst part about it all is that much of this nightmare is orchestrated in sinners’ minds by the father of lies, himself—Satan. The Devil continues to use un-renewed minds of fallen sinners to conduct the majority of his evil handiwork through everything from entertainment to politics, and especially through false religion and godless philosophy.
.
A Ligonier Ministries Daily Devotional article entitled, “And He Ate” says the following…

The woman ate because she saw “that the tree was to be desired to make one wise” (Gen. 3:6). In feasting upon the fruit, Eve attempted to gain wisdom through her own efforts and to know more than God had revealed (contrast w/Prov. 1:7). This temptation to achieve wisdom without the Lord is still present in all men and motivates non-believers to call Christians foolish (1 Cor. 1:18–31). It also leads believers to adopt practices and teachings that appease the culture at large [end quote].

That last sentence is one of today’s foremost problems in Christianity. Adopting practices and teachings that appease the culture at large is one of the subtlest ways that Satan is using false christians to lure the church away from its responsibility to the only true hope that anyone has in this life—the gospel of Christ that is the power of God to save souls from sin. And as far as this current tidal wave of racist rhetoric we are experiencing goes, it is increasingly true that many who call themselves christian are being lured away by their “wokeness” to social discrimination and injustice, and failing to realize that much of the furor at work is based not so much on objective facts as much as it is on appeals to emotion and personal belief.
.
That is why we desperately need to get back to the Bible and obey Romans 12:2 which commands us to be “being transformed by continually renewing our minds”. And the only way we can do that is with committed, earnest, and proper study of Scripture and daily obedience to it. Then we will be able to prove and only approve of that which is the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.
.
So what is a very important connection this writing seeks to point out between Genesis 3:7 and Romans chapter 1? It is simple. Romans 1:19-21 says…

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible [attributes] are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Rather than being thankful for receiving the world, Eve was deceived into acting upon the lust of the flesh, of the eyes, and of the pride of life. The serpent made her long to be like God—knowing good and evil (Gen. 3:5). Eve took the bait and saw that the tree was good for food (lust of the flesh), pleasant to the eyes (lust of the eyes), and a tree desirable to make one wise (the pride of life), and she ate. However, it wasn’t until Adam came along and ate with her that what Eve thought was the truth was revealed to them as the lie, and they both awoke to a woken that was broken.
.
Now they were like God in the sense that they knew good and evil. But the evil they would have learned about through the knowledge of God, they now knew experientially through actual sin within. Their post-truth, eye-opening experience set them and all humanity on a journey in darkness that only the Light of life—Jesus Christ (John 8:12) can save us from. Only true, saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ can give anyone a woken that is unbroken.
.
We can not emphasize enough that racism is born out of the very sin of Adam, and that same sin exists in all of us. That is why with even our best efforts, we can still offend others racially, often without even realizing it. But it is the heart of a true and mature Christian that can receive even the most overt and blatant racial discrimination, and still love and not seek to retaliate or do harm to an enemy, and still seek to give them the gospel.
.
Racism will not be resolved in the earth until Christ comes and remakes it. Yet racism will be resolved right now and forever in every single heart that is renewed by true faith in Christ and His word. The kingdom of heaven is not designed to focus on the problems of the world in order to justify itself. It is designed to focus the world on its Problem Solver—Jesus Christ—who justifies its sinners. We therefore must be careful of our allegiances, coalitions, political affiliations, and protestations…

Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits. Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame (1 Cor. 15:33-34).

May it like never before be that the last thing Christ told us to do prior to leaving earth (Matthew 28:18-20) is the foremost thing we do and are doing until He returns from heaven. As we as Christians are faithful to be about our Father’s business of the Great Commission, we will see how God amazingly and continually adds to the Church daily, such as should be saved (please see Acts 2:40-47). And we will see how God effortlessly also removes sinfulness and, yes, where necessary, even the sin of racial prejudice from their hearts and lives.
.
Instead of being sure that people can see our wokeness, may we turn to the Lord in our brokenness and ask Him to remove Lucifer’s spiritual astigmatism from our eyes so that we might have crystal clear sight of the number one priority. “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).
.
A righteousness without God’s kingdom is a reformation that is destined for failure. And a kingdom without God will always end up a royal disaster. But the kingdom of God with His righteousness is the answer to any and all of humanity’s woes. And none can even SEE that kingdom without being born again, much less enter into it (John 3:1-8). And no one can be born-again without true faith in Jesus Christ (John 3:16).
.
Saints, the fact is that “The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: The LORD gives light to the eyes of both” (Prov. 29:13). Stop devoting so much effort and energy to the deceptions. It is “the individuals” who are deceived, who need the soul-saving gospel that Jesus Christ sent us to offer them.
.
God bless, beloved.
